Their moves on SF are a distraction...........It's the elections that should be returned to the people, a democracy denied should be reversed, the UUP with their infighting have stalled this long enough ....Kennedy is getting into the act now. We'll see............something has to give.

Senate blasts Blair over Ulster

By Sean O'Driscoll, in Washington

15 September 2003

THE Massachusetts State Senate has passed a resolution calling on Tony Blair to name a date for Northern Ireland elections.

The resolution follows lobbying by nationalist campaigners in the US who are urging US politicians to put pressure on the British Government.

On Monday, a Bill due to be introduced into the House of Representatives in Washington by two senior politicians will also call for the Government to stop postponing election dates.

The Massachusetts resolution, introduced by State Senator Steven Tolman, a Boston Democrat, calls for Blair to set a date this autumn for Assembly elections.

Tolman said that he introduced the resolution after being contacted by the leadership of two pro-republican groups, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Irish-American Unity Conference.

Senator Ted Edward Kennedy has already made a strongly worded statement calling for elections in the autumn while 15 members of the US House of Representatives have written a letter to Tony Blair in which they warn that the political vacuum is helping extremists on both sides.

State Senator Tolman said he was very happy that the Massachusetts senate had passed the resolution.

"I am pleased the Senate passed this important resolution calling for free and fair elections in Northern Ireland ? the prime minister's decision to cancel elections strikes at the heart of the democratic process. It takes away the right to vote for your own elected representation," he said.

The Congressional Bill calling on the Government to introduce elections in Northern Ireland and for Sinn Fein to join the Policing Board will be referred to the International Relations Committee when it is introduced on Monday.

Congressman Doug Bereuter, and Henry Hyde, the overall chairman of the International Relations Committee, are jointly introducing the Bill.

It was due to be introduced on Thursday but was delayed because of September 11 commemorations.
