Hows everything in chicken land? Miss your comings and goings on lower Warren. Everyday since the new regime has taken over, the city is looking more and more depressed, a lot of stores are closing due to lack of sales. Soon we will be seeing a real boarded up city, contrary to what some people have said before, as more and more people move away. Taxes are too high, along with the rent, which will help to send more individuals looking for better places to keep some money in their pockets. Just like you did. I won't be far behind you. you must be deep under that rock of yours. I'm "coming and going" on Warren Street every day - often twice or three times. I still live here while I'm working on my house in Stuyvesant.

I didn't move to "keep some money in my poocket." Stuyvesant is a great place, and I love it. I've always been a "country boy" at heart - although I've lived in cities for several periods. I like being able to have a big garden and no neighbors - so I can turn the stereo up as loud as I want (as long as Carol's not home). It's like living in a bird sanctuary. I'm surrounded by fifteen acres of protected wetland (and if seas levels rise six feet due to Global Warming, I'll have waterside property!).

But I'm sorry to be leaving Hudson and sorry I haven't been able to do more to make it better. God knows I've tried. I do think its on the road to recovery, politically, but it has a long way to go. The Scaleranettis did a lot of long-term damage over the course of nearly twelve years, and it will take a long time to clean up.

Meanwhile opportunists and exploiters like Eric Galloway and Elanor Ambose (with a lot of help from the Scaleranettis) have tried to capitalize on the City's rise by making large profits for themselves - but there's always an end to that kind of speculation. On the down-side, some people who speculated unwisely or got in too far behind the curve will get hurt.

Some landlords will have to get out from under buildings they paid too much for, are paying too high taxes on, and can't rent for enough to cover their payments. But that's always true in any specualtive enterprise - some people pay too much and then can't recoup. It's called "price correction."

But on the up-side, Hudson's housing and commercial stock has undergone a substantial transformation. Much of it has been very well upgraded. It's an asset now like it has possibly never been before. Prices will settle out as "wishful-thinking" prices on buildings and rental units have to be reduced in order to move on the market. And Hudson will be left with a much improved property roll and a new influx of property owners (not the current crop of speculators) with vision and imagination, who will respond creatively and imaginatively to the new challenges Hudson faces.

As you say, getting City spending under control is a major challenge - and one the current Administration is slowly addressing. That's the key to reducing taxes. They are less than six months into a two year term. There is a learning curve. But there is plenty of time left in this two year cycle - not to mention what will come in the next elections - to make a real difference. Let's hope and work for (and believe in) the best, shall we?

Joe's moving to Front Street, at the corner of Columbia. He won't be out front on Warren, but he'll still be in walking distance of tallboys from the same convenience store.
