Minnesota government shuts down, puts 9 thousand out of work. Spend, spend the chickens are now coming home to roost as more school districts in New York are having to work with an austerity budget. The taxpayers are in revolt with the spend, spend policies of the liberals.

Gene -

this couldn't be more far-fetched could it? We have a conservative Republican Governor in NY - or are you calling George Pataki a liberal?

We have a State Legislature that is divided between the two parties - a Republican Senate and a Democratic House. Pataki has been Governor for more than 12 years, plenty long enough to influence spending policy.

At the national level we've had the most rabidly "anti-liberal" (I won't call them "conservative" because that would be an insult to true conservatives) Administration in living memory.

They have had more than five years to change our national policy on educational spending on the national level (and they have, by reducing educational spending and failing to fully fund their own "No Child Left Behind" program, to give just two examples), by shifting the responsibility for funding national mandates to localities.

Yet you want to blame New York State spending on the "liberals?" That's simply contrary to the facts.

Americans never object to spending money - we are the world's richest nation. But we want value for our money. There's nothing liberal about that.

We have a national administration that spends billions on foreign wars, Cold War Era weapons systems and on hand-outs to corporations and big business, while reducing taxes on those who already have more money than they could spend in ten life-times, yet is stingy with funding for education, Social Security, Veterans benefits and other programs that make life better for ordinary Americans.

We have a State Administration that cuts education spending to localities in an attempt to push more and more responsibility on to the payers of property tax - the most regressive of taxes, that costs the poor (especially those who rent) a far greater proportion of their income than the rich, instead of the relatively progressive income tax.

We have local Administrations - the BOEs and the local governments (who could at the very least weigh in on the issue) - that allow vastly bloated Administrative budgets in our schools and that would allow the elimination of all of our children's arts, sports and extra-curricular activiites before considering asking top administrators - whose salaries are 3-5 times the average family income for our region - to reduce their numbers or take even a small cut in pay.

Who are the "liberals" on our BOE? Who are the "liberals" in our school administration? In our State Legislature? How have they "forced" this spending down the throats of ordinary taxpayers? And where are the "conservatives" who should be fighting back? Are they so weak and powerless as to be helpless against this "liberal" onslaught?

Really, Gene, if you believe this your world view must be completely skewed.

The truth is that selfish, self-serving politicians and bureaucrats of all parties have joined together to serve their own interests (see how I did that?).

It's not about "liberals" or "conservatives." It's about those who have our children's best interests at heart, and those who put themselves and their interests first.

And It's about us standing up for our kids and insisting on the programs they really need, while forcing our BOE to make changes to reduce administrative spending and hire administrators who can and will implement plans for the improvement of our educational system that produce measurable, positive long-term results.

Tom -

It is in fact "our" money. In a democracy, we get to choose representatives - who are paid by us and responsible to us - to make the decisions about how our money is spent. If you are not making yourself an active part of that process, you have no one but yourself to blame.

Is spending money on researching and writing Historic Preservation laws that will be effective and fair to all, taking into account the rights of property owners as well as the desire of City residents to see their heritage preserved a worthwhile use of our money? I think so - although I would not write a blank check.

Is giving away public property - like the Evans Hose firehouse and the backup water supply - in secret, back-room deals without appraisals or any of the ordinary safe-guards we would all insist on in a real-estate transaction of which we were a part - a good use of tax-payer assets (hence "money")? I hardly think so.

The "Red Ink" you rail against is being creatd by irresponsible spending by an Administration more interested in raising the salaries of its own members and providing jobs for its political cronies than in the welfare of the City.

The current Administration - supported by those they now support in turn to "carry on" their efforts - has shown no interest in controlling spending in any area. They have concentrated on raising property tax rates to raise revenues - to give themselves more money to dispense, even as the population of the City shrinks!

No one has "abandoned" this board, as far as I am aware. But some people don't see the point in spending time engaging in conversation with someone who is as poorly-informed of the facts, as irrationally-opinionated and as rude as you often show yourself to be here.I regret that - but that is their choice and I respect it.

Perhaps you should try posting with more accurate information, making your points more logically and clearly and showing more respect for others. Perhaps then they will feel like participating. Will you give it a try?

In the meantime I'll be looking forward to reading the T.U. story and what kind of reaction unfolds from it.
We sure got an explosion of public opinion on the HCSD Budget defeat that has to be implemented.Too early to tell if the Board and Admistrators got the message.
I hope you have plenty of shecles in your pockets to make the Hudson Opera House,Youth Center, the Hudson Opera House etc.meet their goals while the Competition in the Private sector tries to survive on killing Industries in the Hudson Valey in their conceptual stages. But what do we know
Warren Dtreet and the Proposed Columbia Street name change will bring throngs of visitors to the City to be overcome by the RED LIGHT District's past history.
