Subject: Colum or Rob?

I don't know about you, but this year's Hudson political primaries are posing at least one real dilemma for me. Two guys, both of whom I respect and both of whose input into the local political process I greatly value are running against each other in the Democratic Primary for City Council President.

It is really a shame from my point of view - since whichever one of them loses will then be out of City Government, replaced by...what? They both have experience on the Council and have shown themselves effective at influencing the way City Government does business for the better.

They have both shown genuine concern for their constitutents and worked hard for what they see as the best interests of the City in general. They both appear to be fair and independent-minded, unlike the clone/clowns who have so long delivered decisons up to the self-serving hands of the "ruling clique" (most notably Bob "I don't have to read it, I already know how I'm going to vote" Donahue).

It seems a shame that the Democratic Committee didn't work longer and harder at finding a compromise that would have allowed both Colum and Rob to continue to serve. I see it as a major failure of the City Democratic Leadership that they couldn't find a way to work with both of these guys, who have proven track records of effectiveness and electability.

I still don't know how I'm going to vote. I respect Rob and his prinicipled stance as the lone voice of reason and democratic government when he was first elected to the "Rubber-Stamp" Council. I know he's an intelligent and thoughtful guy who cares about Hudson's future.

I also have a lot of respect for Colum, who has gone out of his way time and again to go the extra mile for his constituents in the First Ward (of whom I am one) and to get the facts and insist on debate on the issues. He has been a vocal and courageous spokesman on some issues, and has been able to work with all members of the Council to improve the level of government.

So who would make the best City Council President? I worry that Rob might be to self-effacing, diplomatic and reasonable to exert the control that postion requires - but I also worry that Colum might be too overpowering in that role. So, I'll be watching and listening to what they both have to say between now and primary day, and my only regret is that both very good men won't be able to win.

Oh yeah, and who's that jabonie Jablonski?

"Oh yeah, and who's that jabonie Jablonski?"

Is this how you promote intelligent conversation on your board?

As far as I know, I've never seen him at a single public function or Common Council meeting. Have you? I never heard his name until it was announced by the Republican Committee, and I've been farily active in politics in the City since the mid 90s.

From what I can see the jabonie (which simply means "guy" with no particular distinction) is simply ticket-fodder for the R's, who expect to live or die by a coaltion of the Good Old Boys mustered in the back-rooms they know so well by Danny and Rick.

If you know something more, please tell it. I meant no dis-respect to Mr. J. (I really have no idea who he is) - it was simply a straighforward question. I'd be glad to have an answer.

don't say the dem committee didn't work hard enough. the did what they wanted to. they stacked their ticket with people who would follow ms. mussman's orders. their hate for scalera is so great they made alliances with their former enemies (quintin) and shunned long time effective dems. now they look stupid cuz scalera isn't running. ms. mussman offered colum the job of waterfront director if he would drop out of the race. she also offerred the job of city attorney to cranna if he wouldn't run. now who do you think if going to call the shots if tracy wins? look at their slate. mussman is the author of the quote, take the HUD out of Hudson (and she lives on grants). thurston made the quote - we should emplode Bliss Towers. this has become the party fueled by hate.
