Subject: english?

hiya! in my english class, we had to interview someone 50 or older that couldn't be out parents and then write 300 words or less about a memorable experience of theirs. well, i chose when my grandma was in the orphanage. of my teachers two english classes, she will pick a "winner" from each and enter them in the ACTUAL competition for a lane cedar chest *about $1000* with a computer inside. i really want to have a chance to win. and i was wondering if you guys could tell me what you think of this? PLEASE. and please don't take this b/c that is plagurism and blahty blah blah and it's my own work and my grandma's memories so please keep that in mind. :)

Can you imagine being secluded from the real world and everything it contains only to find yourself stuck in an orphanage where food was scarce and beatings were an everyday thing? Well, someone I know very well went through that and she is my grandmother. I always respected my grandma but after hearing her story I know it has made a huge impact on me.

When she was only 9, her father and brother were both dead and her mother was unable to take care of the family. So, she was sent to an orphanage with her brother Mickey. There, they did indeed have 3 meals however they consisted of this: breakfast was 2 pieces of bread, red jelly, and milk straight from the cows; lunch was soup that was actually for pregnant women; dinner was kasha. However, on Sunday’s, for breakfast you would also get coffee and butter and for dinner you would get 2 cookies and a sandwich.

As I said before, beatings were an everyday thing. My grandma recalled a few times where she got such beatings. One was for going down to the gardener’s house to see the puppies his dog had. Another was for coloring her nails with a red pencil. One other bit of cruel punishment was if you wet the bed, you would be forced to sit in the middle of the cafeteria with your nightwear still on. She also remembered her brother getting beaten up by the priest for no reason at all.

My grandmother was put through a lot more than that but luckily, her and her brother, Mickey, were rescued by their older sister in their seventh year of being there. After reading this, I hope we all will realize how good we really do have it.
