A computer hacker posted instructions, on Business Week's online technology forum, on how to Check the application status at several business schools, including Stanford, Duke and Dartmouth to see if they were accepted weeks before official offers were sent out.

The website that was hacked was of ApplyYourself, a Fairfax, Virginia-based company that manages Web pages used by students to apply to roughly 300 universities. The schools also use the company to tell applicants if they got in.

Roughly 100 people followed the directions but very few learnt their fate, as all the results were not entered in the computer.
