- Fulton Burley -- Dana Daniels, 11:28:10 05/18/07 Fri [1]
I worked with Fulton Burley in the Golden Horseshoe Revue at Disneyland from 1983 -1986 and a in a production of Sugar Babies in late 1986 to early 1987. Fulton Burley was a master entertainer and one of the funniest persons I've ever met. As a comedian, he was an inspiration and even today there is still a little Fulton Burley in my mannerism on stage.
You know when someone greets you with "how are you doing"
and the usual response is "fine, good or keeping busy.
Not Fulton, he would always respond with "SENSATIONAL"
I posted a video of Fulton on youtube here:

Fulton Burley Died -- Dana Daniels, 12:17:04 05/17/07 Thu [3]
Fulton Burley, 84; star of Disneyland revue
By Valerie J. Nelson, Times Staff Writer
May 17, 2007
Fulton Burley, an Irish tenor who for 24 years starred in the Golden Horseshoe Revue that was one of Disneyland's original attractions, died of heart failure May 7 at an assisted living facility in Carlsbad, the Walt Disney Co. announced. He was 84.
In 1962, Burley first appeared in the vaudeville-style musical comedy revue that had opened along with Disneyland in 1955. By the time the show ended its run in 1986, the Guinness Book of World Records had recognized the revue for giving the most performances — more than 45,000 — in the history of theater.
"He was a natural for it and had a delightful sense of humor," said Wally Boag, who developed the revue and performed alongside Burley for two decades. "When you went by his dressing room, you always knew you were going to hear a good joke."
At Disneyland, Burley also could be heard within the walls of the Enchanted Tiki Room as the voice of the audio-animatronic Irish parrot Michael.
Once the revue ended, Burley periodically toured the country hosting live shows to promote theatrical reissues of such Disney films as "Cinderella."
The son of a newspaperman, Burley was born in Toronto and raised in Windsor, Canada. By 14, he performed three mornings a week on the radio before school and went on to sing with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.
He attended Patterson Collegiate Institute in Windsor and Wayne State University in Detroit but left to sing the lead in Billy Rose's "Diamond Horseshoe Revue" in New York City. He landed the part by auditioning over the telephone.
MGM scouts spotted him in the show and put him under contract. At the studio, he met Boag, and the two appeared as Canadian fliers in the 1945 film "Thrill of a Romance."
During World War II, Burley served in the Army. His commanding officer was actor Melvyn Douglas, and he traveled to China, Burma and India, according to Disney.
After the war, Burley toured the United States in musical productions for several years. He was appearing in Las Vegas when Boag called to tell him the 7-year-old show at Frontierland's Golden Horseshoe Saloon had an opening.
Walt Disney hired him, and Burley began appearing five times a day in a show performed 52 weeks a year.
"Everyone seemed to love him," Boag said, "and we had fun, always."
Burley's wife of 62 years, Terry, died in January. He is survived by a sister, Betty Doggrell, of Scarborough, Canada.
A celebration of his life is being planned.

Great memories dancing at the Shoe. I auditioned for Tommy Mahoney and Mr Disney and got the job! Lead dancer at the Shoe in 1961. Got to do the show for the Shah of Iran and his Queen. Loved working with Wally and Betty Taylor and Fulton. I'm the gal in the red can-can costume and my name is Toni Terry. I'm 64 now, mother of a Deputy Sheriff and grandma to Tasha 18, Chris 15, Jonathan 7 and Hannah 7. I currently ballroom and West Coast Swing dance. Working at the Golden Horseshoe was a great job. How wonderful to find such a heartwarming tribute to one of my favorite places in the whole world. I spent much of my childhood, in the '50s at the new theme park in a place called Anaheim. I roamed the streets before it was opened and when it finally opened my dad Donald Novis, gave me a "press pass' so I didn't have to wait in all the lines. I felt pretty importent at 15. Wally Boag an my dad met in Australia when they were both down there working. When he and his beautiful wife, Ellen moved to Southern California we all became fast friend. Wally was, of corse one of the funniest and gentlest man I'd ever met. The memories of Disneyland,The Golden Horseshoe, and of Mr. Disney, who roamed the park frequently, are among my most treasured .I'm happy the old days are remembered by so many fans Carol Novis

- FF+2, Clara Ward -- David M. Currie, 13:27:18 12/02/04 Thu [4]
Working at Disneyland in the late 60s was a treat. Each Friday night during the summer, the Golden Horseshoe would rotate guest performers. One weekend it would be the Firehouse Five plus Two, the following weekend it would be the Clara Ward Gospel Singers. If I was working on the Jungle Cruise that night, I'd have to slip over during a break to listen. If I wasn't working, I stayed at the park after my shift to listen to great dixieland and gospel music.
There is a DVD from Swing Era that contains some FF+2 videos recorded in the early 50s. The title is 'Dixielanders: Firehouse Five Plus Two, Red Nichols' (IDVD 1056). I purchased mine through Worlds Records. The DVD is the closest I've come to reliving the Friday evenings.

I have always LOVED the Golden Horseshoe, and was so sad to recently visit Disney World and find that the whole show had changed to a character show. I had to leave as it was just too sad. I did corner one of the entertainement directors and voice my opinion. It seems that all we have now are just the memories of a wonderful show. Thank you for helping preserve those memories.

I just discovered your website and greatly appreciate the amount of work you have done accumulating the historical information and photographs regarding Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe Saloon and its shows over the past 48 years.
My first visit to the Golden Horseshoe was 30 years ago in November 1973. We saw the regular show (plus the Police Gazette version) several times during the 1970s. One of the earliest performances featured a comedian as the Traveling Salesman / Pecos Bill who had a strong resemblance to Phil Silvers. While having a different style from Wally Boag, I remember him being very funny.
From your description of the show's history, I assume that this person was Bert Henry, who covered the role while Wally Boag was working at the Diamond Horseshoe in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. I also recall seeing some of the artwork on the outside of the Golden Horseshoe featuring a drawing that seemed to depict this performer, so this would make sense for an extended substitute.
Do you know any biographical information about Bert Henry?

Wally Boag is my dad's cousin, and my family enjoyed a lot of happy family times together at Disneyland, especially for my great granny's birthday (Wallys and my dad's grandma). No birthday was complete without seeing Wally on stage at the Golden Horseshoe review. I was fascinated at how he could "spit out his teeth" (he'd keep white beans in the pocket of his cheek) whenever he wanted... I always wanted to be able to do that! One of my fondest memories as a little girl was being called up on stage with my little brother (I was eight, and I think steve was five) during Wally's part of the show. He made us balloon dogs, and when he asked my brother what kind of dog he wanted, he thought real hard, and then whispered "a puppy: into the microphone. (We called him Uncle Wally - we didn't understand how someone so much older could be a cousin!). He was scared by the resulting laughter:-) We still love to go find Wally's window on mainstreet, and Disneyland just isn't Disneyland for me without seeing Slew Foot Sue's costume - I thought she was THEEEEE most beautiful, glamorous lady I'd ever seen. I remember she let me wear her feather boa once, and I think that still, in the depths of my heart, I consider a sparkly blue salloon dress and feather boa to be the soul of glamour!:-)

I've just discovered this webpage and I'm absolutely transported! My gosh, I never knew there were others out there who loved this show as much as my family and I did.
We lived over an hour away from Disneyland, yet, my parents found the time and money to take all five of us to visit one special day every summer from 1955 to 1973. (..then we took over taking our own children for precious visits...)
Sometimes it would be 12 of us when family from out-of-state came to visit. Now my father is 80 years old and in declining health and we kids would love to find any information regarding how to buy a tape, CD, or original phonograph of The Golden Horseshoe Revue.
Dad would love to hear those old routines and songs again.
The Horseshoe was his favorite! We all loved to have lunch there everytime we visited.
To be very honest...our kids love to hear those old stories of how Disneyland used to be and how sad that it has changed so much, and not for the better, I'm afraid....
Anyway...if there is ANYONE out there who can guide us to information regarding purchasing this PLEASE contact me!
Thank you so much! :)

In his note, Christopher DeSantis wote that he had also sent the photos to you and to Wally Boag. I wasn't familiar with your site, so I looked for it on Google.
And that was my second pleasant surprise today. Your tribute to the Golden Horseshoe is great! I've only scratched the surface of your site so far. I promise to add a link to your site from my Disney Park Links page(which I plan to rework as a Disneyland history links page).

The Last Variety Show -- Jan @ JansWorld.net, 22:49:47 10/08/03 Wed [3]
What a wonderful set of Five final shows, Dana and Hal did today, but how sad that it was the last Variety shows performed ever!
I saw the last three shows today and had the honor of photographing all three shows for this History of the Golden Horseshoe website.
Following the 3pm show, Disney Entertainment managers bid a private farewell to Dana and Hal backstage and presented him with a cake.
During the 4:15 show, the New Orleans Square a capella group, Side Effect briefly entertained Dana with "Rockin" Robin" and sang a spirited good-bye to the show.
At the last 5:30 show, we were treated to many guests in the audience including one of Dana's first sound men, Bobby Davis, Dana's wife, Jane, and two children, his first piano player for three years, Richard Allen, many of his co-workers and fellow magicians from all over California, dozens of his most ardent fans [including myself] and last, but certainly not least, Mr. Wally Boag, the creator and star of the first Golden Horseshoe Revue and Dana's mentor.
Wally stood up and spoke for about 10 minutes and treated us to his voice impressions of Jose, the Tiki Room Parrot that he voiced. He shared the story of his Disneyland connection to Dana and noted comedian, Steve Martin and thanked Dana for his dedication to the Variety Show after 4000+ performances.
Dana ended the show with Luigi's famous Can-Can Dance and left the stage to a thunderous standing ovations and an encore. Bless you Dana Daniels for making us laugh for 8+ years in the Golden Horseshoe, as well as the mant years that you performed in Frontierland and Fantasyland. You and Hal will be greatly missed!

Variety Show Canceled! -- Maggie & Doug Godfrey, 22:07:54 09/24/03 Wed [4]
Today was a sad day for the Variety Show. They were given their 2 weeks notice after their lunch break and just before their third show. Dana said it was hard to come out and do the show, but of course he did a surpurb job, even though he had a sore foot. The show went on. Doug & I have been a fan of Dana & Hal's for quite some time now. We went to City Hall to make a complaint. A manager from entertainment came to talk with us and hear our concerns. We were told that there are going to be 7 days of Billy Hill and the Hillbillies at the Golden Horseshoe. That did not ease our pain of losing the Variety Show. Please show your support to the Variety Show, their are just 2 weeks left. Sept.30th,Oct.1st and Oct.7th & the 8th is his last day! Let's let Dana Daniels know how much we enjoy his show.

great site, jan, thanks so much for doing all this work.
i was sam the bartender in the mid-80's and my years at disneyland are some of the fondest memories i have in show biz.
the cast was great, the staff was great, the audiences were always superb, ready to laugh, and i always was thrilled to be a part of something (disneyland) that i had loved so much as a kid (my folks drove me and my brother out from denver colorado just to see disneyland when i was a child) and as a young adult (went to disneyland many times).
i will tattle on myself and tell you something i did which was 1000% against the rules...in between shows i often would change into my civvies to go on the rides...i remember one day riding space mountain 10 times! i loved it!
i will come back and add more memories as time permits. meanwhile please feel free to visit my professional show biz career web site at www.gilchristner.com. click on the "stage" balloon on the left to read about my days at disneyland!
also, i am very happy to once again be employed by the disney company this year, only on television! i have filmed a commercial for disney resorts, which, from what i hear, will be airing sometime in the fall. look for me as the guy on the golf course with the walkie talkie trying to fool my wife in to thinking i'm on the "tower of terror" at the orlando resorts!

When the picture was taken I was about 6 years old. I distinctly remember attending the show many times during the summers of 1963, '64 and '65 when we were living in Santa Ana, Ca., just around the corner from the Magic Kingdom. Hate to be a nit picker but could not resist letting you know. Nice job with the site!

Wow, the History of the Golden Horseshoe pages are amazing. I'm so glad I stumbled across them. I use to spend free time watching Wally's show from the back and it's so nice to see someone remember the show in such a special way. I have been back to the park a few times over the years with kids and grandkids and I also enjoy Billy Hill's show. Always good clean fun and amazing music. Thanks for these web pages and keep up the good work.

Welcome to Memories of the Golden Horseshoe! -- Webmistress Jan @ JansWorld.net, 22:34:45 09/10/03 Wed [1]
The Golden Horseshoe Saloon holds a special place in my heart and I have come to discover that many others feel the same way. I have created this message board so that special memories of Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe Saloon can be shared.
Please post and share your favorite memory!
