New festival to celebrate Melbourne – the city of music
Thursday, 6 May 2010
Melbourne’s heartbeat is music.
Today City of Melbourne has announced a 12-day festival to showcase the very best of the music industry and celebrate the diversity of the local scene.
The Melbourne Music festival, presented by the City of Melbourne, will feature live performances across all music genres, in venues from world class concert halls to renowned local haunts, and acts from headline artists to the hottest emerging talent in the business.
Unveiling the festival, Lord Mayor Robert Doyle and Councillor Cathy Oke said Council had committed $595,000 to the inaugural Melbourne Music event.
“Melbourne Music will create a platform for Melbourne's music scene - musicians, venues, record labels and songwriters alike - to be celebrated, nurtured and encouraged in a way never before seen in this country,” the Lord Mayor said.
“The city’s live music scene is world renowned. We have our own world-class symphony orchestra, an opera company, and Melbourne is acknowledged as the leading location in Australia for live music and musical theatre, evidenced by the number of live music venues within the city and international musicals that choose to premiere here.
“From contemporary to classical, indie to mainstream – Melbourne Music will showcase the music industry’s best and brightest.”
Music Victoria, the state’s newly established contemporary music industry peak body, applauded Council’s decision to fund the event.
"Melbourne has always been known as a city of musical diversity and innovation with artists as diverse as Dame Nellie Melba, Paul Kelly, Percy Grainger and Kylie. We congratulate the City of Melbourne for establishing this initiative, and look forward to working with them in celebrating our world-class city of music," Chairman Andrew Walker said.
Melbourne Music will premiere on September 29 and will include the Australian Independent Music Awards at the Forum on Friday 1 October.
The awards honour those artists who are released through an Australian-owned independent record label and distributed through an Australian-owned distribution company, raising the profile of the nation’s independent music scene.
Both free and ticketed performances will take place throughout the CBD, from live music venues and laneways, to the Melbourne Town Hall and the Arts Centre, to City Square and Federation Square.
While full program details will be unveiled closer to the date, other highlights will include:
■hosting of the Australian International Music Show – an open-to-the-public day featuring workshops, performances, master classes, musical coaching sessions and access to musical instruments
■staging of a musical theatre performance in City Square featuring artists from upcoming major productions
■Town Hall concerts featuring the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
■daily ‘pop-up’ performances by street musicians and artists across the CBD
■music industry showcase gigs at city venues
■live broadcasting from 3PBS 106.7 FM radio throughout the festival and
■a free public concert of independent recording artists in Federation Square.
Councillor Cathy Oke, Future Melbourne (Eco-City) Committee Chair, said Melbourne Music was a great way to support the local music scene and foster new and emerging talent.
“We are thrilled to have Australian Independent Records and 3PBS 106.7 FM on board during the festival, along with other key organisations such as the Australian Music Association, Australian Performing Rights Association, The Push, Music Victoria, Mushroom Marketing and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra,” Cr Oke said.
“This event will give Melburnians the chance to experience the very best elements of our local music industry. The workshops and seminars will also enable industry representatives and up-and-coming artists to listen and learn from local and international guest speakers.”
Melbourne Music will take place from Wednesday 29 September to Sunday 10 October. Further programming details will be announced later in the year, and available on www.thatsmelbourne.com.au.
