I think that I agree with you here, Joel. Rereading the end of the Metamorphosis, Gregor does become more buglike--more like his father. Yet do the words "against his will" really deny his sacrifice? I felt like that last line did not really cohere with the few lines before it. Gregor stops eating, pretty much stops willing himself to live. Perhaps, his death is a momentary resurfacing of the old Gregor. Having become more buglike, the old selfless Gregor now returns and dies against the will of the bug who has taken over his mind.
