I saw the same thing when I was reading. Jean-Baptiste doesn't complete the standard formula for repentance. He certainly confesses. In fact, his confessions are found throughout the entire book. Whether he is contrite, I am not sure. It seems he does feel some contrition when he is talking about how he began to realize who he really was when he lived in Paris. He also seems to show contrition when talking about the woman jumping off the bridge. He had a sense of guilt for his actions that evening. But, so far he doesn't seem to have true repentance. He didn't change his ways in Paris and throw off his selfish motivations. And, so far, he hasn't done anything to show that he has made any effort to change. So, if he can’t accomplish repentance, it doesn’t seem there is any point to his confession. Maybe it is to advise the reader what he should avoid in his own life.
