Subject: The possibilty of the UM's redemption

In an Article that I will be reviewing, the author makes the claim that the UM may yet be saved by the memory of his actions against Liza. He says that the narrating-UM shows remorse at his actions and that this remorse could lead to his redemption. When I talked to Dr. Jackson about it, he made the point that the UM has been deliberating on these things forever--there is no way he will be saved unless he acts and loves as Liza did. Now reading through the end of Notes, I read this line, where the NARRATOR is talking about his PAST self: "I had never before endured such suffering and remorse." So, in writing the confession, the narrator-UM is clearly not feeling shame for the first time. He felt terrible remorse before, but, because of his overconsciousness and his need to dominate, it was useless remorse.
