It is surprising that he sort of plays with both sides of this. He seems to be such an advocate of not having freedom because of the responsibility and the difficulty which come with the freedom of choosing that, although I was surprised to see his comment about advocating slavery on I think 132, he would only argue for slavery. Perhaps this is just his evolution throughout the story. He started with freedom and had no problem with it, then pretty much said that it has led him to trouble--the life that he has arrived at and the girl on the bridge etc.
