Subject: Intro to Critique Essay

In Helen Vendler’s “Emily Dickinson thinking,” she analyzes how Dickinson’s poetry conveys thought more than other poetry. She conveys how Dickinson’s use of something she calls “chromaticity,” or the need to express every moment and detail of an event, rises to this “thought” in her poetry. She also analyzes different poems that portray thinking clearly, and points out the devices Dickinson is using that convey this thought. At the very beginning of the article Vendler assesses Dickinson’s poetry in a thorough and accurate way, but as the article progresses, she begins to be careless and not analyze Dickinson’s poetry completely. At the end of the article, she again thoroughly analyzes Dickinson’s poetry, but the lack of analysis in the middle of the article makes the entire article seem rushed and lacking. She follows the same format with each poem she introduces, which lends to a well-organized article, but doesn’t allow the author to look into the details enough.
