I don't know if optimist is the right word to describe him, I would probably use the word naive. Yes, he sets out as a knight errant because he believes there to be evils in the world that need fixing, but in the prostitute situation and many others, it's not that he's just trying to be optimistic but it's that in all the knight books that he had read, how much do they really talk about all the evils in the world and in how much detail? It's really all about the knight's bravery and generally they are happy, go-lucky novels. When he saw the prostitutes he just assumed they were "high born maidens." I think it's very fair to say he wasn't just saying that to be optimistic, he had no idea that they were prostitutes because he sees everything through the eyes of his chivalry books.
