I think it may be possible that he is simply trying to �spread the word� and set an example of knight-errantry throughout the land, wherever he naturally ends up. As you�ve mentioned, he certainly does seem to lack a sense of direction, and his purpose seems skewed through this. This may be tied into the fact that he is play-acting in the sense that he isn�t a �real� knight with a �real� quest (or a �real� lady or squire, among other things) and therefore tends to make things up as he goes along.
