I think Don Quixote is trying to let fate lead him more than anything, he thinks that the world is corrupt, and wherever he goes, he is bound to find someone in trouble that will "need" his help. It seems to be working for him, because he usually does run into some situation that he believes calls for his help, even if he has to imagine it, which he usually does. Only in the second part does he really have things he no longer needs to imagine, but that is only because people are creating this manifestation for him.
