I would have to agree that Gertrude is somewhat of a confusing character- as readers, we get quite a few different perspectives of her- from the ghost of King Hamlet, Hamlet, and Claudius. I'm inclined to believe that Gertrude is not entirely aware of what she's doing. I don't think she really had any part in the murder of her husband. I'm think that perhaps Shakespeare makes her into the foolish woman, which is why she remarries Claudius. And finally, I think her only motive in spying on Hamlet is to help him.
