Subject: More on Ophelia

What really sends her over the edge? We never see a transition, we only see her mad in 4.5. I can only guess that it is Hamlets being send away that does it. Her brother is already gone and knows nothing, he has been out of the picture for some time. Her father dies a little previous to Hamlets being sent away, but we really don’t have a time scale on that, so t might be almost immediately. I would guess it is since it is the murder that is probably the catalyst for sending the guy away. So she cracks because of Hamlets leaving and because her father is dead. Which is more important? I tend to think it is the abandonment by Hamlet that unhinges her. I think she finally realizes, with the death of her father at Hamlets hand that he is really really crazy and she won’t get him back. And then he leaves in physical presence, so there’s absolutely nothing to hope for. Plus, what was Polonius to her really? He seems to be a neglectful father on some levels., and is always using her as a tool.
