I think thats part of the point of the story, not necessarily his simplicity, but his innocence, and how that should be maintained into adulthood. It is true that as you get older, one seems to appreciate the little things in life much less, because we are so focused on moving forward. Especially in America. At least in other countries they get a lot of vacation time from their jobs that they are required to take so they can go out and appreciate the world. I met so many people from other countries when I was in Guatemala, and they all said the same thing, that Americans move too fast.
