Subject: Murders in Absinthe

Murders in Absinthe
Or the Absinthe Murders.

(A Period Piece)
(Research provided by a Maxim Magazine Article
on Absinthe August 2003. Used as a Reference)
(An Article entitled Catching the Green Fairy)

It was a strong drink which later on would be banned.

Some who drank it turned to Madness. Those who drank it
risked both blindness and death. It was called Absinthe.
It was known as a Magical green liqueur which became
known for its unique psychoactive properties and bitter
licorice flavor. The sauce has a rep you know for inducing
madness. Its definately not your average 140 proof drink.
It is a drink known in france as la fe'e verte, the
green fairy. It is a drink made from the wormwood plant,
which has in it a psychoactive oil called thujone. Drinking
absinthe often causes an effect that is described as a
heightened clarity which has had a very inspiring effect
on those in the arts and entertainment district, from
writers, to poets to artists. Absinthe may explain why
artist Vincent Van Gogh chopped off his own ear and gave
it to a lady of the evening. This inspiring effect
accompanies the normal feelings of drunkeness. The key
to drinking it safely is mixing it with plenty of water
and sugar.

But it was in the old west. The 1800s right after the Civil
War. The French had come to the old west and brought the
Green Fairy of absinthe with them.

This is where our story truly begins.

Rudolph Verona was an artist. He was a painter who drank
Absinthe for inspiration. He lived in a mining community
out west called Paradise Springs. It was a Boom Town. But
it was becoming more then just this. It was definately
looking like it was a town here to stay. It was also a town
that promoted lawlessness. Three town Marshalls in three months
had been killed. Anything and everything was going on in Paradise
Springs.

Opium use was wide Spread. Paradise Springs was also known
as Poisonous Springs. Those who passed thru this Boom Town
were never the same.

The 1st victim was Identified as Ramona Whitfield. She worked
at one of the local brothels. A Stake was found inbedded
in her chest and her body was painted in a rainbow of colors.
An Empty bottle of the Green Fairy was found near her body.
Thus this homicide and the killings after this became known
as Murders in Absinthe or the Absinthe Murders.

Jacque Bowman ran the local tavern. He was making a killing.
Especially with the Green Fairy. French immigrants in search
of gold made up a large part of Paradise Springs population.
They were addicted to La Fe'e verte, the Green fairy,
Absinthe. Three days later another victim was found in a field.
She also worked at a brothel. Her name was Laura Thompson.
She also had a wooden stake thru her chest, and had been
painted and dumped. Paradise Springs drew many artists.
Some were just passing thru, but a few stayed just for the
view. The Towns biggest industry was the Brothel. This along
with the heavy drinking angered Alice Drete who was an activist
for womans rights. But she was against lifes so called Sinful
Pleasures, gambling, drinking and womanizing, also sex
before marriage. But she herself was not the angel she
made herself out to be. Roosevelt Parker was a Catholic
Priest who traveled with her. But he was also her lover.

Bo Fulton was the new town Marshall and Frank Cole was his
Deputy.

Two men came into the town together, Ludwig Oppenheimer
had traveled the world hunting vampires. He had followed
a Clan to Paradise Springs from Transylvania. Walt Horshin
had become his side kick as where vampires roamed their was
also a hight volume of witch craft and devil or demon worship.
He was a world reknowned witch hunter. They immediately set
their sights on Roosevelt Parker and Alice Drete.

Jacque Bowman ran out of Absinthe. It would be a week until
more would become available. The madness of the addiction
was setting in. The whole town was on edge. In two weeks
four women had been killed the last two were strangled but
their bodies also were painted. All of them worked in the
numerous taverns and brothels that lined Main Street.

Morgan Doyle was an out of town lawman who came into town
with a bad reputation. But he had cleaned up other Boom
towns in the area. The problem was that those who fled the
towns he cleaned up ended up here in Paradise.

The killer of the four hookers was said to be high on Absinthe.
There had been no murders of that kind in Paradise Springs
in two weeks. But then there had been no Absinthe in Paradise
Springs in two weeks.

Fatima Rodriguez was the grieving widow of the previous
town marshall Roberto Rodriguez. It had only been a month.
But she was feeling very lonely without Roberto and her three
year old son Alphonzo needed a father. She wanted to leave
Paradise Springs. It had poisoned her life. She had noticed
Morgan Doyle. She didn't believe he had a bad reputation. She
could feel he was a good man.
She wanted to get to know him. But he was distant. She
wondered why.
Jacque Bowman the largest tavern owner finally got three
wagons full of absinthe he ordered three weeks before.
He ordered another three wagons full just to be safe.
The murders soon began again.
Alice Drete soon wanted the town to ban absinthe. This infuriated
the unknown killer who wasn't so unknown in his line of work.

Jacque Bowman was up in arms as well, absinthe was his top
selling drink.

Most of the women in the town worked in the brothels.
Which is how the killer found their victims. But the killer
and Jacque Bowman along with many others in the town
were looking to put Alice Drete out of the way and expose
her for what she was. Their were rumors swirling around the
town about her affair with Roosevelt Parker the priest
who traveled with her.

The Murders kept coming four more prostitutes were found
dead within the next four days. Stacy Robbins whose last
wordes were spoken to Frank Cole. She told him that she loved
him. Darla Perone was last seen in the church with Roosevelt
Parker. She was found dead on the alter. Then Barbara Taylors
body was found in the river. She was drowned and had been
branded. Samantha Martin was found dead in the Coal Mine,
naked and painted from head to toe. Tara McReynolds was
seeing Rudolph Verona and was questioned by Ludwig Oppenheimer.
The next day Oppenheimer and his partner Walt Horshin were
found dead along with Tara McReynolds. So their now
had been 5 murders in 7 days. The town was running out
of live bodies. The Town Marshall Bo Fulton and his deputy
Frank Cole were working late. But they would pay for it
with their lives. SOmeone blocked the door and set the
Marshalls office on fire. At that time Morgan Doyle was in
the Hotel Paradise tavern. When Fatima Rodriguez walked in.
The killer was also there watching Fatima. Drawing her
and Mr. Doyle. Fatima spoke to Morgan. They went over to
her place. They chatted for hours then her little boy woke
up.
Alphonzo- Momma who is this?

Fatima- His name is Morgan. He's a friend.

Alphonzo- I miss poppa.

Fatima- I know you do. I miss him too. Now back to bed
little one. You need your rest.

Alphonzo goes back to bed.

Morgan Doyle- You have a fine little boy.

Fatima- He needs a father. His father was the town marshall

but was killed in the line of duty. His name was Roberto.
Did you know him.

Morgan- No, but I heard about his exploits.

Fatima- And I know your a good man. I want to get to know
you better.

Morgan leaves but promises to have dinner with her that
evening.

He finds out that morning that he is now the law in this
town. He finds an empty Keg of Absinthe near the burned
out marshalls office and a couple empty bottles.

He found two more bodies that day in a hotel room.
Alice Drete and her priest and lover were found in bed
together. Morgan did not know if all the homicides in this
town were connected. But he was fairly sure they were.
He had a hunch. He questioned Jacque Bowman 1st.

While he questioned Jacque Bowman all Fatima Rodriguez
could do was think of him. She spent all day cooking dinner.
Alphonzo spent the day with one of his aunts. He was going
to stay there for a few days. And have some fun with his
cousins and his uncle.

Well Morgan Doyle was convinced that Jacque wasn't the killer
but he found out who had been buying all the absinthe.
That night Morgan and Fatima ate a wonderful meal and chatted
for a long while. She rested in his arms and felt his desire.
She wanted him and she knew he wanted her. They made love
for hours. The next morning they bathed together.
Fatima went to the market early that morning. But she
wasn't alone. The killer followed her. Followed her home.
He had paint on his hands and a very large wooden stake.
He was out of his mind on Absinthe. When she got home
Morgan was still asleep in her bed. He awoke and grabbed
his gun. Fatima thought he was about to shoot her. She
cowered in the corner but heard the shots fly. She looked
back and saw Rudolph Verona fall to the floor in a pool
of blood. Morgan dropped his gun and ran to Fatima. He
held her in his arms. They soon left Paradise Springs. They
took Alphonzo with them. They moved back east. Morgan
wrote a best selling book about the murders. Absinthe
was banned forever in Paradise Springs. Jacque Bowman tells
the story of the murders all the time. He knew the killer.
He kept a secret stash of Absinthe for himself and one
day the pain got to him and he hung himself in his bar.
The pain of knowing he sold the Absinthe to the killer,
and was partly responsible for all the senseless deaths.
An empty bottle of Absinthe and a suicide not were found
beside him.
Rudolph Verona as with many artists became famous only
after his death. One of his paintings just fetched a million
dollars at auction. It was called Paradise. And was
a canvas of Paradise Springs with pictorials of all the
women he killed. And an empty bottle of Absinthe was
featured prominently in the forground. With a sign
saying come drink our Green Fairy. he became famous
and infamous only after his death.
