I don't understand the recent Pledge Of Allegiance furor. Like it or not, this country is predicated on the idea of separation of church and state, and I'm frankly surprised that it took this long for some enterprising atheist to challenge it. Whatever one's religious beliefs, however, the pledge can still perform its intended patriotic function. The words "under God" were added to the original pledge in the 1950's. Why not just restore it to its previous "Godless" condition? Why wouldn't everyone be satisfied with that?
