Date Posted: 19:36:42 10/22/03 Wed What the RIAA is trying to do is only one small effort in an overall attempt by corporate copyright holders in EVERY industry to screw people. The copyright battle includes but is not limited to music, movies, photographs, the internet, and even computer software & hardware. If they get their way, these lobbies will strip everyone in the world of the ability to do anything with the content they "buy" other than what the copyright owner deigns to allow you. You'll be locked into what hardware and software will work. And they'll control what content you can even get, limiting what you see and hear to what they want you to see and hear. This makes "1984" and Big Brother into feeble amateurs by comparison. And the governments of the world seem more than willing to be led to the slaughterhouse by these big money interests. I don't know about you, but it scares the living s**t out of me. zippy. http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/7073776.htm Copyright industry after another power grab By Dan Gillmor Mercury News FLAG THIS: The Federal Communications Commission is about to give Hollywood a veto over innovation in the technology industry. If the latest power grab by the copyright industry succeeds, progress will be the loser, as will you. Hollywood couldn't get Congress to do its dirty work on the ``broadcast flag'' -- a proposal to embed software that would prevent tomorrow's devices from copying digital television programming that contained don't-copy instructions. So it's going to the regulators, who seem all too willing to comply despite all kinds of opposition from groups that have less lobbying money and clout. The purpose is ostensibly to stop online trading of movies and TV shows. But its other goal is to force us all into a pay-per-view world, where the copyright cartel banishes fair use -- your right to make personal copies for use on other devices you own -- and turns everything digital into something over which copyright holders exert absolute control. So, if this succeeds, get ready for the end of time-shifting. Get ready for the era when you are not permitted to fast-forward through commercials, or skip them entirely, without paying extra. Get ready to pay extra if you want to make a backup copy. Get ready to be told specifically what software you can use in the devices you've purchased for multiple purposes, because without that software -- most likely from Microsoft, which is happily collaborating with Hollywood on this -- you won't be able to watch or listen to or, maybe, even read copyrighted works at all. This is where the cartel is heading, and the broadcast flag is a key tool. Call your U.S. House member and senators (202-224-3121) and tell them to put the heat on the FCC, even if the exercise may be futile. Sadly, on both sides of the congressional aisle, and most definitely in the Bush administration, your rights are considered worthless next to the rights of Hollywood. But it's still worth trying. This is about control -- and you'll have none if these kinds of rules keep becoming law. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
