Subject: IRISH POLITICAL PRISONERS TRANSFERRED TO HMP BELMARSH!

Three of the six remaining Irish political prisoners in England have been transferred to Belmarsh High Security Prison in London - to await repatriation to Portlaoise.
Two others are likely to follow in next few weeks.

Declan Rafferty and Michael McDonald - who were serving sentences in HMP Whitemoor - and Fintan O'Farrell in HMP Full Sutton - were transferred on Wednesday afternoon last to Belmarsh. They are likely to remain there for a week and possibly more awaiting repatriation.
We understand the brothers Aiden and Robert Hulme are soon to follow and will be repatriated to Portlaoise during October.
This will leave Noel Maguire the last remaining Irish political prisoner in Britain - and we are very concerned for his welfare. Last October Noel was viciously assaulted by two inmates in Full Sutton wielding knives. He received severe cuts to his arms and hands and had to be hospitalised for 10 days.
Despite this, the Irish Ministry of Justice has again turned Noel's recent application for repatriation down - on very dubious grounds. Noel has no relatives in Britain and his only relatives are in Ireland - north and south. Noel also holds a valid Irish passport issued in Dublin in 1999.
He has all the prerequisites for repatriation under European Union law.
We have asked the Irish Commission for Prisoners Overseas to take up Noel's case as a matter of urgency, and await their reply. We are also planning a series of protests and pickets outside the Irish Embassy in London to highlight Noel's case.
