Oppose the French Show Trials!

On behalf of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement, the Irish
Republican Socialist Committees of North America have issued the
following statement condemning the upcoming show trials by the French
government against leftist political activists.

In France, a dozen Spanish activists are being held under preventive
detention orders, keeping them imprisoned without trial. Along with
other exceptional measures, their preventive detention may be extended
up to four years without trial. Seven of them have been held since
July 2002 and will finally go to trial on 16 November 2005, nearly
three and a half years since their arrests. Two others, currently at
liberty, will also go on trial at the same time.

These trials are in accordance with the Fortress Europe agenda, where
European states, in this case France and Spain, are cooperating to
eradicate all threats to the status quo resulting from working class
resistance. The accused in these cases have been targeted because of
their political activism against European capitalism and imperialism,
and the French government cannot hide the fact that it wants to
convict them solely on that basis. Their 'crime' is being communists
and anti-imperialists.

These trials are reminiscent of the show trials Irish republican and
republican socialist activists have experienced in Ireland, Britain,
and elsewhere. From the Sallins train robbery case where members of
the IRSM were arrested, tortured, and convicted without evidence; to
the supergrass trials using paid perjurers; to the arrest and
imprisonment of three IRSM members in France in 1982; to the trials of
the Birmingham Six, Guildford Four, etc., where merely being Irish was
accepted as proof of guilt; these trials are nothing new to us and we
extend our solidarity to the men going on trial in Paris.

We call on all radical and progressive political activists to oppose
these trials and support the activists who are going on trial. It's
vitally important that we all do whatever we can to support them.

The show trials are set to begin on 16 November 2005 at 9am and will
be held in Paris' notorious Palais de Justice. Nine sessions will take
place, all of which will be held on Wednesday mornings, and Thursday
and Friday evenings, until 2 December.

Solidarity protests and pickets are already being planned across the
globe. Protest letters, faxes, and emails are also being organised. Be
part of the solidarity, be part of the protest!

Stop the Repression, Stop the Brutality! End the Show Trials! Release
All Political Hostages Now!
