Solidarity with Spanish Hunger Strikers in France

On behalf of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement, the Irish
Republican Socialist Committees of North America send our solidarity
to the Spanish political prisoners in France who began an indefinite
hunger strike on 28 October.

As we detailed in a previous statement, a dozen Spanish activists
belonging to the Communist Party of Spain (Reconstituted) and GRAPO
are being held under preventive detention orders in France, keeping
them imprisoned without trial since July 2002. They will finally go to
trial on 16 November 2005, nearly three and a half years after their
arrests.

On 8 September, a French court denied the prisoners' request to be
moved together to Fresnes Prison in order to prepare for their defense
in the forthcoming trials. The prisoners have been isolated, beaten,
and tortured while in French custody, and now they are being blocked
from adequately preparing a group defense for what can only be
described as show trials.

Irish republican socialists know full well the courage it takes for
someone to use their own body as a weapon of protest. In 1981, three
members of the Irish National Liberation Army - Patsy O'Hara, Kevin
Lynch, and Michael Devine - died on hunger strike, along with seven
members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, struggling to win
their legitimate rights as prisoners of war. Hunger striking has a
long history in Irish culture dating back thousands of years.

Thus we stand in solidarity with the brave prisoners of the Communist
Party of Spain (Reconstituted) and GRAPO, who have nothing but their
own bodies with which to protest against the abuses of the French
legal system. Their demands are just, legitimate, and humane.

We also call on other political organisations to set up solidarity
campaigns for protest actions and for all human rights organisations
to urgently look into the cases of these men, their mistreatment, and
the host of false charges against them.

Victory to the hunger strikers!
