Subject: 18-20 February: Fallen Comrades of the IRSM

Fallen Comrades of the Irish Republican Socialist Movement

*******

Michael "Mickey" Kearney
Volunteer - Irish National Liberation Army
Assassinated on 18 February 1987

Michael "Mickey" Kearney, aged 33 and a father of five, was ambushed
by the Irish People's Liberation Organisation after he slipped out of
hiding to visit his wife and children in Ballymurphy, West Belfast.

He had been released from prison before Christmas in 1986 after
charges against him were withdrawn because the appeals judge rejected
the testimony against him by an informer. He then found himself placed
on an IPLO hit list as that organisation attempted to destroy the IRSM.

A memorial to Kearney and another comrade was unveiled in the New
Barnsley area of West Belfast on 20 January 2003.

Assassinated on 20 February 1975

Hugh Ferguson, aged 19, was the first person to be killed in the
Official Irish Republican Army's attacks on the newly formed IRSM. He
was shot to death at a building site in the Whiterock area of West
Belfast where he was working.

At the time of his death, he was the chair of the IRSP's Whiterock
branch and a volunteer in the INLA. He was a member of the Official
Republican Movement prior to joining the IRSM.

A memorial to Ferguson and another comrade was unveiled in the
Whiterock area of West Belfast on 23 February 2003.

They died as they lived: as Republican Socialists. Remember them with
honour and pride.
