17 couples lured by 'prize' trick


IT MAY be one of the oldest tricks in the book, but the 'you've-won-a- lucky-draw-prize' trick is still very much alive and kicking.

On Wednesday evening last week, at least 17 couples were lured to Ngee Ann City by a 'guaranteed' prize of a plasma TV, laptop or home theatre system, offered by Leisure Group Marketing (LGM) Limited, in exchange for attending a two-hour presentation.

More than two hours later, businessman Andy Lim and his wife Hazel came out, complaining that it was all a scam.

The couple, in their late 40s, had received an e-mail from Expo Management Limited. When Mrs Lim called, she was told the presentation was for a new travel website. Since she is in the travel business, she decided to check it out.

The website presentation took hardly five minutes. For the most part, they were subjected to a high-pressure sales pitch to get them to sign up for a $28,000 holiday discount programme.

They were repeatedly urged to put down a $9,000 deposit in order to claim the prize, even though the e-mail specifically stated that there was 'no obligation to purchase or book anything'.

They did not sign up for the programme and also refused to pay the $85 handling charge in exchange for their 'prize' - a small speaker Mrs Lim said did not look 'worth more than $50'.

The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) has received complaints against LGM and a few other firms for luring consumers with misleading promises. Case said it received 2,521 such complaints last year.

Mr Seah Seng Choon, executive director of Case, advised consumers to stand firm if they are not interested in the offer, reminding them that under the Consumer Protection Fair Trading Act there is a three-day cooling-off period during which they can rescind the contract.
