Subject: Payment of Maintenance Fees for Timeshare Membership

Many people don't realise that a Timeshare membership comes with an annual Maintenance Fee. This fee according to the marketing company is to pay for the upkeep of your resort/s in the best possible condition so that u could enjoy your holidays when u use them. And the Maintenance is levied according to the size of the unit u buy. The bigger the size of the accommodation the higher your maintenance fees. Many people who pay on instalments don't realize or forget that the Maintenance Fees kicks in once they have fully paid up the cost of the membership. Reality sets in once u receive a demand letter for the Maintenance Fees. And then u realize u have to pay the maintenance fees every year for that one week of holiday annually. And then u realize that the maintenance fees can increase every few years to a sum beyond your control.
There is no such thing as u have to pay Maintenance Fees for life. The only thing that can happen if you don't pay your maintenance fees (provided u have fully paid up the membership) is that your membership of the timeshare club will be terminated. You will loose whatever money u have paid for the membership. Don't be fooled or threatened by the timeshare company into insisting you pay up the maintenance fees. If they insist get them to give it to you in writing. I have been a timeshare member before and i gave up my membership because of the spiralling increase in the maintenance fees. The company sent me some letters and i ignored them. I am not bothered anymore. Caveat Emptor!

George, are you absolutely sure that they won't pester you for the maintenance fee. I've been paying for it for more than 10 years and it's in pound. I'm sick and tired of the whole scheme...just trying to get rid of it fast...losing sleep over it.

I have just receive a letter for the maintenance fee of my timeshare.
It is stated in the letter that 'The failure of making payment before the deadline will result in repossession of your membership, and the further use of your membership will require a reinstate fee.'

So if I don't pay, they won't pester or sue me, just repossess the membership. So be it.

George, you said that there is no such thing as we have to pay the annual maintenance fees and we can forgo the membership? I have actually stopped payment 2 years ago but was shocked to received a demand letter recently from the resort that I have to pay outfront the outstanding and late payment charges, if I don't pay, they can take legal action against me. This demand letter is from the resort itself, not the timeshare company that sold me this membership because the company was closed down already. Please advise what should I do then? I'm so worried now as the fees is very high.

My advise is to seek proper legal advise with a lawyer.

Hi Ivy and Jan. Don't be cowed by these frauds who threaten u with legal action for not paying the maintenance fees. They are just trying to intimidate u into paying for the membership of the timeshare club of which a sizeable amount of your money has been spirited away. The timeshare membership is only worth the paper it is printed on. Don't ever think u have purchased and investment which you can pass on to your children. On the contrary your children will inherit a liability and headache when the maintenance cost of the timeshare membership keeps souring and u or anyone will not be in a position to control it. Let me ask u. As a member of the timeshare club do you know who the management of the club or membership are? Are you in a position to protest against the spiralling increase of the maintenane fees? The answer is NO!
Check your contract documents. Does it say anywhere u have to keep on paying your maintenance fees for life?
