All I would have to do is point you at Joss Whedon. BTVS has covered intense topics from the alt-relationship of Willow and Tara to topics like adoption with Dawn, and death with Buffy's mother Joyce. Though I have to admit I'm worried now that Buffy is on UPN, I mean that's the same PTB for Trek. I'm just praying Whedon stood up to them, rather then crumble like Berman and Braga.
