My favorite singer is a rap and hip hop singer called Tupac Amaru Shakur. Heīs not well-known at all here in Brazil, but in the U.S. heīs seen by many as the best singer of the genre. He was born in New York and spent his childhood moving around in its worst neighborhoods. He had a really tough childhood with a drug addict for a mother, no father , hunger, etc. Still, he loved acting, it was an escape from his reality. He studied it and got some small theatrical works. Though mainly known for his music and appearances, which he always guaranteed made the news, he was active in music as well as in cinema throughout his short life. He started in music as a member of a group called Digital Underground which didnīt see much success after its release album. He quickly went off to a solo career and debuted his solo album called 2pacalipse Now and started his stardom. At the time, some people liked the album, but Iīve never, really. This same year he starred in a film called Juice, which has played here in Brazil a few times. The next one shows considerable musical development, and it was called Strickly for my Niggas. It has one song that clearly shows the development of 2pacīs musical abilities and his talent called “Keep ya head up”. 2pac was very much concerned with social matters. This same year he also released another film called Poetic Justice where he co-started with Janet Jackson.
There was an interruption of his career due to his getting shot five times, two in the head, when he was on the way to a recording studio. He was always in the wrong crowd getting involved with the wrong people. Then he miraculously recovered to come out and make what is the best rap/hip hop album ever! I remember it was the first CD I ever bought and itīs called Dear Mama. The song that names the album is the best rap song ever made and it sold $2 million. Then he released his last life album which is the double album that most sold in music history called All Eyez on Me. It sold $3 million and every song is perfect. When I listen to it I can never skip a song and say oh, I donīt like this one. Then, in September 11th, 1996 Tupac was shot again, but he did not make it this time and eventually died on September 13th.
After his death he has released many albums (some are still in production since he left a lot of lyrics behind), two movies and a book of his original poetry called “The Rose that Grew from Concrete.” Tupac is the top-selling hip hop artist ever, dead or alive, having sold over $38 million in his career. Even after death, his album called “Until the End of Time” was the top-grossing album of 2001, five years after his death.
