Subject: Xmas task

The first Christmas-related ad I found was in The Guardian. It tells of a yearly campaign done around Christmas which aims at helping people that have difficult realities. The program is called Christmas Charity Appeal. Money is collected through donations and are invested in these people. The branch I read about dealt with the contribution aimed at giving these people access to safe water. Every 15 seconds a child dies due to lack of access to safe drinking water. The estimate of people that lack it is up to 1 billion. Last year the organization raised Ģ567,804.

The second article I read that is Christmas-related was found in Newsweek and it was about Christmas sales. The question is whether or not it will be a jolly Christmas for retailers. The Thanksgiving weekend enjoyed a 5.4 % increase in comparison to last year, but according to the article the late November and early December statistics have been deceiving, historically. Still the retailers have high hopes for this year with its federation expecting an increase of somewhere around 5.7%, revenues of something around 217.4 billion in sales. But a consulting firm called Retail Forward doesnīt feel so confident and expects the increase to be of about 4%. According to its predictions families are expecting to pay less. The average a family is expected to spend $455 on gifts, which represents a 5% decrease from last year.

The third and final article I read was in Time. It used the story of the recent arrest of a man named Badat to address a big concern that has been going around Britain in relation to the possible occurrence of a terrorist attack over the Holidays. Though uneventful, last year was filled with concern as well. Still, this year the Bristish have more reasons to be more concerned with Tony Blairīs backing of the war in Iraq. Due to this, Chrsitmas is not only a season to be jolly, but one to be wary.
