The article I found on the CNN site tells of the conflicts that Columbia´s Defense Minister, Ramirez, has gone through while at her office. In general, she has done a real fine job, according to the statistics presented on the article. But the problem seems to be more related to sexism than to her competence. There were two problems. First, she was summoned to appear at senate and account for three tons of cocaine that were missing and under her responsibility. She had to admit that she did not know because the generals had kept information from her. On another occasion, she flew to Spain to accept two jets that had been donated, just to arrive there to be told that the jets would require costly maintainance and would be unsuitable for the forces. Columbia´s air force chief said she should have known better. The article states that she is very well-qualified for her position, as is expected since it´s still not easy for a woman to reach such a position. She really would have to be special. Besides, she´s a workoholic who´s always focused. I guess she just slipped up on two occasions. The president , who still has three years of government ahead of him shows absolutely no signs of reconsiderations as to who should occupy the position of minister of defense in his government. The whole story seems to be a simple reflectin of how deep sexism is still planted within society in 2003.
