FREE WRITING ACTIVITY: READING
Reading is one of the things I enjoy the most. When I was younger, my father used to say that reading could take him anywhere and that was the only way he could travel and “visit” places. Even though my father is a Physicist, he knows about Literature and has read much more than most of the people I know.

When my father started telling the story of his childhood and how he could only go places though reading, I used to think there was a bit of exaggeration it since I had always been able to go many places, or rather; my father had been able to afford taking my family to many places. Still, I grew fonder of reading and as I did, I started to think more and more like him.

I also used to marvel – and that was even when I started to study Language Arts (Letras) at the University – at how much people understood Literature and how well they could read through the text itself. I thought I would never be able to be like that and even considered going more deeply into Linguistics. After taking some disciplines on Literature I realized how in love I am with reading and nowadays I am a much more mature reader who is able to READ, namely, recognize and understand symbols, identify writing styles as well as the perspective (historical, personal) people choose in a text. I am even able to read poetry!!!

My all time favorite book is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by an American writer and poetess Maya Angelou.

All in all, I think that besides being a good way to improve writing skills and speech since the more you read, the more you learn vocabulary and structures, reading is also a great source of knowledge.
