Subject: Music today

I have worked in as Record Exec for many years. I am obviously much older than the people here. Hilary Duff is stereotypical of what is wrong with music today. Yes, I know if I work in the music business I must part of the problem. I have tried to get bands signed that are actually talented and whose music goes beyond the usual bubble gum pop of Jessica, Brittany, Hilary etc.

When I was growing up bands like U2 sang about the political situation in Ireland. The Sex Pistols sang a punk/anarchy style that may have seemed mindless but was a rebellion against a classist society. The Clash were left wing idealists, Bruce Springsteen sang about the working mans struggles and would talk on stage about his father and his personal experiences with the Vietnam war draft. Rap was in its early days and groups like Grandmaster Flash and the furious five sang about life in the ghetto.

We have Band-Aid which was focused the world's attention in the plight of starving & suffering children in Africa. Even the silly Beastie Boys focused on the plight of Tibet. It created an idealism and political awareness in us.

It seems today's groups don't do this. Some pay lip service to causes.

The world is going through some horrific times and popular music doesn't seem to speak of it.

I haven't come here to bash Hilary Duff. I am simply asking the next generation to ask more from their musicians. Soon the world's problems will be your problems, I hope when you meet them you will do so with love and compassion.
