Topic: ignition timing on G

I am reworking a '49 JD G and was wondering what
ignition timinhg to run. Compression ratio is 6.7:1, everthing else is pretty
much stock except for some mild porting. Unit has a 45K volt coil and stock
distributor. Stock timing is 26BTC which seems entirely too advanced, as the
tractor runs too smoothly there. Seems like too much work wasted on the
negative side of TDC. Anyway, what would be your recommendation for nominal
timing? I don't have a dyno and don't have easy access to one. I am looking for
a ballpark figure from which to start. I'm running 93 octane straight gas, for
what it is worth. Also, what would you expect for power output from the beast?
I have heard 52-54 hp; is this about right? I am running about 50 RPM over.Your
thoughts, pls.Thanks,Rob

Your best bet to dial it in is still the dyno! Go to
a tractorpull where they check classes on the dyno. And put it on one! You'll
be glad you did. My JD-G makes the most horsepower when it is running the
smoothest.
