Yup. Marius set the stage with his 7 consulships, Sulla set the precedent of using his army to march on Rome (2x) to put an end to his political opponents, and Caesar grew up within this context. Without a full understanding of the uniquely Roman concept of dignitas, though, I doubt we can ever truly grasp his motivations.

Once the cat was out of the bag, there was no going back. The whole thing would be repeated over and over again every time an intelligent general took power. Dictatorship was really the only way to maintain a sense of control, but then you have the problem of psychotic or idiotic dictators.

And the whole thing, really, came down to land distribution.
