Hi Ian,

RB is off back to Egypt today and on another desert trail in few weeks. The impression he gets is that there could be more discoveries waiting to be revealed in this relatively little explored part of Egypt. It is only since the introduction of 4x4 vehicles and GPS technology that have made inhospitable areas of the Sahara desert accessible. The terrain is much akin to being on the planet Mars.

Each year there are only 100 or so military permits issued since armed escorts need to be provided for adventurists. Future visits by tourists may be likely be restricted with growing concerns about potential damage to important sites such as happened to Nabta Playa, etc. Archaeological expeditions are also few and far between with more interest lying in tomb and temple digs in more established areas of the country.

Who knows what history will reveal in this vast sand covered region. A sort of sand sunken Atlantis

Cheers,
Fuzzy
