Subject: Egyptian Grammar

Most of us who learn to read the Hieroglyphic script of course, use Gardeners Grammar, this though is a difficult book to use without a teacher, or a key. Luckily I was provided with a key. To compliment Gardener, you should use Faulkner's, Dictionary of Middle Egyptian.

Some people prefer Watterson's two books on the Grammer, the first one is easy, but I found the second work somewhat difficult to use.

Recenlty, I came across Guther Roeder's ' Egyptian Hieroglyphic Grammer, this book is very dated, written well before Gardener, but is suprisingly good, and very useful. Roeder of course, knew Erman and Budge, two of the greatest scholars from Egyptology, Erman's work is still widely used today. Budge went out of fashion, but nobody can doubt his huge contribution to scholarship.

My contention is, anybody who is serious about Ancient Egypt should at least make some effort to understand the writing.

Best

Ian
