excellant comparisson.

every single, criticism of the Sphinx as a 'what you see is what they built' 4th Dynasty construct, completely ignores AE beliefs when it comes to the hows and whys behind it.

I have mentioned the complications that the logistics surropunding a recarve entail. In an effort to better illustrate this point, and in responce to many questions at GHMB I am currently putting together an article on same.

THis isn[t a piece of styrofoam that was shaped out with a saw and a rasp. It is brittle, flakey limestone, and some of the layers that the Sphinx is carved out of are not suitable for carving at all. But having carved the head they had no choice but to carry on. The thing is...once exposed the poor quality styone of the neck and chin would have been blatantly apparent as wopuld those same levels in the exposed wall of the enclosure. Anyone attempting a recarve would have to be INSANE.

JC suggestion that what we see is a completely different piece of stone attached to the body is so ridiculous it defies the imagination.

I should have the paper together in a couple of weeks. I'll need some kind of visuals so that's gonna take some work. I've had lots of intersting people e mail me their encouragement and offers of assistance.

In the merantime I'll ask what I allways ask. Where did the tools for a predynastic sculpting come from???

Warwick
