Subject: Ephemeral Figures from Armarna

I've just been reading Joyce Tildesley's ' Nefertiti, Egypt's Sun Queen'. Whilst it is a good and informative work, I can't agree with all of the Author's assertions.

Nonetheless, it mentions yet another Ephemeral and shadowy person from the period, namely the Princess Beketaten. She is shown in a tomb scene inscribed on a lintel in the tomb of Huya. The scene celebrates a vist by Tiy to her son, Akhenaten in Akhetaten. Beketaten is shown with Tiy, and accordingly you have to agree with Tyildelsey that the child is associated with Tiy. As Huya neglected to mention the regnal year of Akhenaten when the vist took place, it is not known how old the child was, as we do not know how long Amunhotep III has been dead at the time of the vist. Assuming the child to be Amunhotep's and Tiys. Shown with the sidelock of youth, we can but assume she was quite young, maybe as young as five. Although Tyidelsey points out that this should not be taken literally, and child may of been as old as 14 yrs. Personally, I think we should accept the sidelock as evidence of her child status, dating Tiyes vist to quite early in Akhetatens existence. Whether the child is Tiy's, or a relative is open to speculation. She quickly vanishes from the scene.

It is to be hoped that any new discoveries in the area of KV62 may help to clear up some of these minor, though engaging mysteries.

Best
Ian
