Subject: MEMORIES FROM THE PIERPONT ROOF

I suspect residents of the various UMass dorms did not have access to their dorm's roof let alone fight for it, but Pierponters seemed different. Was this determination to battle for the roof an old Pierpont tradition?

I remember when that door was locked because we were told all the foot traffic was causing the roof to leak. Within days the lock was busted and students were back up there. It was like the dorm generally... it did not have any security and any outside doors that anyone tried to were lock, soon those locks were busted.

One night in spring 75 my roommate of the time, Ray F, wanted to launch a hot air balloon. You know the type... an X of wood made of a broken yardstick with 20-30 candles... and a big trash bag. Back then it was a UFO prank which is why this was done at night.

Despite all the candles, the balloon didn't have the lift to get off the ground, so a coconspirator suggested Ray drop it off the side of the dorm. He did. It still didn't have the lift. It dropped until it hit an open casement window. The wooden X hit the window and plastic bag fell atop it catching on fire. Seconds later the window was engulfed in burning plastic. We heard screams from below and made good our escape. I have a pic somewhere of the crime in progress.
So should anyone here have been at Pierpont in 75 and heard about the flaming window... as Paul Harvey would say... and now you know the rest of the story.
