Hi,
I just found out about your forum after attending Open House at Umass with my son and talking to a Matthew who now works with the Epoch program at Pierpont. I lived in basement sunset and was glad to hear that those were no longer used as dorm rooms.
I told Matthew about a great Halloween party where things (of course) got out of hand and we were forced to leave. I was amused to read back through past postings here to see Ted's account of a Halloween party in 1978. I can give you an inside version of that story - it is one of my favorite Pierpont memories.
It was Halloween of 1978 and I lived in John Adams at the time. My new boyfriend was a Pierpont Alumni, Bruce Pote, and his friends were in a Grateful Dead cover Band called High Tide. We went with the band to Pierpont and played in the main lounge to a packed crowd all decked out in their best costumes. The party was for Pierpont people and friends only I guess because they had to close off the doors at some point.
People were banging on the windows trying to get in. A friend of ours with a nasty sense of humor taunted someone through the window and then the guy got mad and punched in the window. It was bedlam for a bit and the next thing I knew there were firemen walking into the lounge in their yellow firemen suits with oxygen tanks on their backs. They were telling us all to get out. Everyone thought they were costumes and were saying things like "cool costume man!" OK we were wasted at this point. Eventually everyone got cleared out except our friends in the band refused to leave the equipment and got into a heated arguement with the fire chief who threatened to have us all arrested.
I think we finally just loaded the equipment into the van and "bolted" as we used to say.
The following spring, having learned nothing from this experience, I moved with my roommate Gretchen into basement sunset. Third room from the right. I don't remember the number.
