Back in the old days, if one came in though the cellar entrance off Fearing St (sp) there was a large steel plate on the floor. It was probably 3x4'. Years ago this was walled in and with good reason.

As I remember one descended into a small pit, then had to climb over the insulated steam pipes. There was a small crawl space that ran along the pipes. If one went to the left they eventually came out beneath a locked storage room in the north side of the Sunset wing. From there they had to lift another steel plate to enter. If one went right, they came out in the Physical Plant's room. Again a steel plate barred the way. The trick was always to try and be quiet.

In the Physical Plant room were the controls that ran the heating and electrical services for the dorm. I recall there were also emergency shut off switches for neighboring dorms like Cance. One member of our party, Peter, could not resist. He threw that switch briefly knocking out power to that dorm. It was clear leaving the way we got in was too risky. We left by the main door into the basement hallway and got the hell out of Dodge.
