Sorry to spam a bit here but…
Janet, Paulie’s adoptive mother, has cold hands. People have cold hands because of poor blood circulation. Paulie first refers to her biological mother as her “blood mother.” This implies that Paulie considers Janet a “bloodless mother,” not only cold, like a corpse, but also unrelated to her biologically. Paulie and her “real” mother are true family because their “blood runs together.” [Paulie uses this phrase later when she makes Mary her ‘blood sister’ by pressing their bleeding palms together.]
