Here is an extract from the L&D script that I didn’t see the significance of originally, but now think supports the notion that Paulie needs Tori’s love, in part, to substitute for a mother’s love.
As Tori gets ready for her first date with Jake, she and Paulie have an unpleasant verbal exchange. After Tori leaves, Paulie says to Mary,
“That brightness – eh? – in her eyes.
That brightness, like my fake mother’s,
that brightness when she lies.”
Earlier in the movie, Paulie describes her adoptive mother, Janet, at the end of the letter to her “blood” mother. “P.S. Janet…my fake mother…she smiles without her eyes and her hands are cold.”
Judy Thompson explicitly shows that this connection between Tori and mothers exists (subconsciously?) in Paulie’s mind. As her relationship with Tori begins to unravel, Paulie feels the emotion coming from Tori shifting from the warmth supplied by a real mother to the “chilly” tolerance she receives from her adoptive mother.
