I think that the duel would have better been left out of the movie, but more than the duel it is this totally weird scene in the forest with the bird, before the duel, where mary has to cite shakespeare while feeding the bird.

This movie is a beautyfull, but nevertheless flawed work of art. And i think it's mostly the script that's flawed.
The acting of piper perabo is brilliant and also this actress who played miss vaughn realy made and impression.

But the end you mention is also strange.
Why is mary B suddenly capable of remembering her mothers face again? it seems to come out of nowhere. I would have loved it better if somehow she would have linked it with paulie's death in some way, if she would have sayd something in the sense of: "the shock and cruelty of paulies violent death, made me realize the importance of love and how gratefull i am for the love i'd been given. From then on i decided that as long as i live, i will never ever forget you"...something in that direction would have made more sense to me.
