If I were to relate Tory to a real experience, I think she she only choose Jake because she was too scared to accept her true felings which of course is not completely acceptable in society. Tory was hurting just as much as Paulie.
I think Paulie's death changed her and left her with regret and she feels that its her fault. Shes barely living now and wishes that she could turn back time, and undo everything. If she could she would be with Pailie again.
