SUMMARY: The former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey has spoken out against the appointment of openly gay Bishop Gene Robinson in the U.S. Episcopal Church.

The former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey has spoken out against the appointment of openly gay Bishop Gene Robinson in the U.S. Episcopal Church, suggesting the worldwide church will be irrecoverably damaged.

In a letter to The Times, Carey said that the global Anglican Communion, which amounts to 70 million people, will see "incalculable" damage because of the appointment. The Episcopal Church is the U.S. branch of Anglicanism.

The letter expresses Carey's concern that the church could be broken up by Robinson, who is determined not to step down from his position, claiming he is called by God to modernize the Church.

This week has already seen leaders of Africa's different Anglican churches cutting ties with the U.S. Diocese of New Hampshire, which will now be led by Robinson.

Conservative Anglicans in the United States are also threatening to create a new branch of the communion that sticks to more traditional values.

But Carey echoed the current Archbishop Rowan Williams' calls for unity in the letter, urging all followers to hold together and protect the communion from schism.
