I am Filipino but I perfectly understood why Miss Philippines was not even an inch away from the Miss World crown.

I was so proud of Carlene Aguilar’s presence in Miss World pageant, checking on websites and discovering her impact to beauty pageant experts was a moment of pride and joy. And when she was chosen Miss Cyber Press World, I was really thinking and praying that she would become our country’s first Miss World. 5-5 is my lucky number and I wanted Carlene to have my luck and be crowned as the 55th Miss World.

But when I saw the list of judges, I somehow felt that it would be hard for her to make it. I was thinking that judges’ mindset and exposure would define their own concept of a beauty queen, and even if there would be variations for they have different regional identities, but I knew that a Miss Philippines in Carlene would be lacking depth in all of them. I was really afraid they would see her as too manicured and they would not find the natural beauty of a Filipina in Carlene. I wished they have visited websites to see for themselves how people have adored Miss Philippines.

When Azra Akin (Miss World 2002, Turkey), was asked by the host on final night what was she looking for as judge, she pointed out that “first its beauty, then the personality that is seen through the eyes and the smile.” I was looking at Carlene’s impact on the TV screen, I found the smile so sweet but the eyes did not have the glow of confidence. Miss Philippines was definitely a better speaker than Miss Korea but Eun Young Oh was glowing and her video footage showed a pretty-and-happy persona. Carlene was somewhat tense, her sparkling elegant gown overshadowed her. And the hair did not have the freedom to be the crowning glory of a Filipina. While Miss Korea’s chima- inspired gown helped in making a difference on stage, it pays to project you own national identity, plus the fact that she already had an edge for her "Beauty with a Purpose Award" was presented as an important achievement.

Carlene did not have a chance to overpower her fellow Asians for the interview portion was too short and they had it only as part of the introduction, there was no opportunity for her to give us a moment of intellectual orgasm or impress the crowd with a longer line in Mandarin – I wanted the audience to know that she is good with the Chinese language.( Miss South Africa sounded smart but her beauty is not typically African but Carlene was truly an Asian beauty, so the slot went to an all-African Miss Tanzania) I wanted Carlene to have the same impact created by Chelsi Smith when Miss Universe was held in Africa, the crowd loved Chelsi as their own. I wanted China to welcome the homecoming of daughter but there was some kind of inferiority complex in Carlene – am not sure about this, this is just an impression.

I respected the judges’ choice of Miss Iceland Unnur Birna. I actually like her subtle and simple presence in all portions. She was not overpowering but she has this old-fashion glory. She is like the typical muse in a prom – in a good-girl mold. And she was visible – her subtle presence was strongly felt. The face of an angel was shining in Unnur, the 55th Miss World!

The winner of the Beach Beauty contest not necessarily is the winner of the MW pageant: the Irish winner of 2003 is also that year's Beach Beauty winner, but last year Peru's winner of the pageant wasn't even among the TOP 5 of Beach Beauty. But the winner of Beach Beauty last year - United States - and one of the Beach Beauty finalists - Dominican Republic - were the two TOP 3 Finalists of the MW pageant.

This year RUSSIA is the winner of Beach Beauty, and it has to be said that she's a stunning beauty, coming from a big country that sends many votes for its delegate. That makes the chance that Russia wins this year even bigger. But the winner could be 1 of the finalists of Beach Beauty as well and when we consider the popularity of each in the several bets - that up to now have correctly predicted the winners of 2003 and 2004 - this year the MW winner could be CANADA or ICELAND or it could be ITALY, MEXICO or the PHILIPPINES.

As the winner will be chosen among the continental queens, and considering that Canada has the best chance as she is the biggest fav from the Americas among the bookmakers, I don't see Mexico win; but Mexico could be a TOP 5 finalist.

PHILIPPINES still has the best chance of all, as she still undoubtfully is the BIG fav among ALL bookmakers. RUSSIA - this year winner of Beach Beauty - could end up as a TOP 3 finalist, and Italy could be the third TOP 3 finalist this year, for Italy persistently is among the best ranked ones among all bookmakers while she ranked as a semifinalist in the Beach Beauty contest as well. I have to say that to me it was a surprise seeing MOLDOVA end up as first runner up in the Beach Beauty contest, for she does not appear among the favs among the bookmakers. I believe she won't make it despite her high position as 1st runner-up in Beach Beauty.

PUERTO RICO is the one who surprisingly did not even reach the Semifinal of the Beach Beauty contest, while she still is one of the big favs among the bookmakers. And DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - the second biggest fav from the Caribbean among the bookmakers - did not reach the Beach Beauty Semifinal either. TRINIDAD & TOBAGO did and that makes the chance of Trinidad surprisingly ending up in the TOP 15 bigger than before. But I still expect to see PR and DR for Caribbean in the TOP 15. AMERICAN VIRGIN ISLAND already is a TOP 15 semifinalist for the Caribbean, for she' the new winner of Talent. But I do not expect her to be the Caribbean queen.

COSTA RICA is another possible MW winner; she's among the bookmakers a fav (appearing in 14 of the 15 betting lists) and Costa Rica also ranked as a Beach Beauty semifinalist.

LEBANON too could be this year's winner: she too ranked as a Beach Beauty semifinalist, while she is a fav among many bookmakers (she's appearing in 11 of the 15 betting lists).

As for now the rank (from highest to lowest among the FIVE biggest favs) according to those who put their money where their mouths are and for 2 consecutive years predicted the MW winner correctly is this: (the real result won't differ very much from this rank just 3 days before the MW Finals).

01.PHILIPPINES (BB semifinalist & Bookmakers's biggest fav)
02.CANADA (BB TOP 5 finalist & 1 of Bookmakers's big favs)
03.ICELAND (BB TOP 5 finalist & 1 of Bookmakers's big favs)
04.ITALY (BB Semifinalist & 1 of Bookmakers's biggest favs)
05.COSTA RICA (BB Semifinalist & a fav among 14 Bookmakers)

You can see that despite this year's results for the Beach Beauty contest Russia and Mexico don't appear amomg the 5 with the highest chance of becoming the next Miss World....

But it might again happen that the winner of Beach Beauty ends up in the MW TOP 5, just like in 2003 and in 2004. In that case Russia is likely to replace Costa Rica (the only one in the above TOP 5 not a fav among all 15 bookmakers)..

And it still might happen that a non-semifinalist of Beach Beauty wins the MW pageant, like last year. But that isn't likely to happen this year, cos the Philippines - the # 1 among all bookmakers - did end up among the semifinalists of Beach Beauty, what makes her already big lead upon the other favs among bookmakers (CR, England, Italy, Namibia, DR, PR, Switzerland) increase. So, it may indeed be Russia that surprises us with a rank in the TOP 5, but the chance that a fav like PR will make into the TOP 5 remians small.

Nine former Miss World titleholders will have the responsibility of choosing this year's Winner

A panel composed of nine of Miss World's most accomplished titleholders will have the responsibility of choosing the winner of the 55th version of the pageant.

The spectacular women are already in Sanya and will have the difficult task of narrowing the group of 15 semifinalists, to the six Continental Queens of Beauty, and the new Miss World 2005.

This year's judges are:

- Denise Perrier (Miss World 1953, from France)

- Ann Sydney (Miss World 1964, from the United Kingdom)

- Lucia Tavares Petterle (Miss World 1971, from Brazil)

- Wilnelia Merced Forsythe (Miss World 1975, from Puerto Rico)

- Mariasela Alvarez (Miss World 1982, from the Dominican Republic)

- Julia Kourotchkina (Miss World 1992, from Russia)

- Diana Hayden (Miss World 1997, from India)

- Agbani Darego (Miss World 2001, from Nigeria)

- Azra Akin (Miss World 2002, from Turkey)

With only India to represent Asia and with Hayden's British outlook, Miss Philippines may not be the kind of beauty that this year's judges will like for they have their own stereotype of a beauty queen. With their own biases, she can easily be overshadowed by the Latinas or the Euro line of beauties. There is no sense of balance in the set of judges, so it's possible: Goodbye ASIA for 2005!

Subject: Fiorella Castellanos-Miss Mundo Perú 2005

Author:

Miss World Venezuela - Susan Carrizo - Student of Dentistry - 21 years - 1.77 meters of stature (5'10").

Voting Number: MW517

Miss World 2005: -.Interview.-

What is the best thing about your country?

In Venezuela, I like the people because they are warm, they are also very joyful and have a good sense of humour.

What is your favourite?..

Film: 'Titanic' // Music: Romantic // Singer/band: Luis Miguel // Book: 'The World’s Greatest Salesman'

If you were granted one wish, what would it be?

I would like to win this pageant in order to grow, promote my country’s name and help those in need.

If you were stuck on a Desert Island with one other person (famous or not) whom would you choose?

I would choose Tom Hanks ‘Cast Away’ since he since he should know how to survive in that situation.

What is your message to all the other Miss World contestants?

My message would be to participate in the pageant, always giving it their best, without envy or bad intentions, so that when it is all over, each one of them knows they did well, without hurting anyone.

You’re judging the final five contestants, which question would you ask the finalists?

My question would be: If you won the Miss World pageant what would you do during your reign, in order to be worth of a tribute?

Susan Berliz of 1,77 meters of stature(5'10"), 21 years and student of Dentistry, it would use the crown of Miss Venezuela to foment a campaign that reduces the high costs of the dental treatments in the country. She dreams of traveling to the moon. Their favorite hobby is to share healthily with its friends and to read, she is defined as obstinate and shy.

It arrived in Caracas with the illusion of representing Venezuela in the world, because she believes have the conditions and the dignity sufficient to make it.

This season, IPG reveals a new attitude to style. Luxurious, sexy, cool. Relaxed, not careless, with contemporary sophistication. A provocative, feminine collection. Mature, without being left behind

The inspiration for IPG's winter 06/07 collection comes from South America. Designer Turet Knuefermann discovered the stylish designs and incredible cuts this vibrant part of the world has to offer on a recent visit, prompting her desire to translate and adapt them for the Australasian market. The result - a look that fills the gap between raw street culture and high fashion.

IPG (International Play Girl) is a New Zealand fashion label rapidly gaining momentum both in New Zealand and overseas. One of the many success stories to emerge from Air New Zealand Fashion Week, fashion commentators have praised the label's cutting edge design and alluring street savvy flair.

IPG's sleek styling sees the feminine form in clean, strong lines. Garments are sophisticated and luxurious, with the seductive allure and latin flavour that IPG is well known for. Sumptuous fabrics and delicate knits promise a stream of must have pieces for the discerning wardrobe.

The label's 05/06 winter collection takes its inspiration from South America and the Tango, the drama and passion of which has enthralled dancers and audiences for centuries. IPG's fifth showing at Air New Zealand Fashion Week, the collection promises to capture the imagination and take viewers from the backstreets of Buenos Aires to the glittering ballrooms of Paris.

PICTURE ON THE LEFT: AFRICA'S ONLY MISS WORLD WINNER (2001)
PICTURE ON THE RIGHT: INDIA'S LAST MISS WORLD WINNER (2000)

This year Julia Morley and her MWO come with a renewed way of electing the new Miss World: the voters will decide who the new Miss World is. The prettiest and also most popular ones are known. Besides the three "Fast Track Winners" the following 12 MW 2005 Delegates are the 12 possible Winners:

CHINAWith her 5'10" Ting-Ting Chao surely is not a Chinese girl of average height. For the 3rd consecutive year Miss World is beaing held in China. That may mean that China will win.

COSTA RICALeonora Jimenez is Miss Asia Pacific, what means she's been able to conquer an international title already. Costa Rica - for the 1st time - really has a potential MW Winner.

ECUADORAnother tall Latina with a good chance of winning it all and Marielisa Marquez is Ecuador's first who could win it.

GREECEAs Miss Hellas 2005 Katerina Stickoudi is Greece's chance of winning MW after 9 years. This 5'10" tall beauty may be the next Miss World, as Greece can rock quite surprisingly.

IRELANDCould Aoife Cogan do it again for Ireland, 2 years after the Irish success in MW? I think she can!! This tall model is one of the promising beauties in the upcoming MW Event.

ISRAELLast time Israel won the MW Pageant was in 1998. The girl representing Israel this year is the type Julia Morley and MWO love as Miss World. Let's see if Keren Sacham makes it.

ITALYSofia Bruscoli has already been named as the potential new Miss World. She is a tall and stunning model and possibly it will be Italy that carries away the MW Title this year.

MALAYSIAThe best placement Malaysia's ever got in MW was a spot in the TOP3. Standing 6 feet tall Emmeline Ng surely is an Eastasian beauty that could be Esat Asia's first MW Winner.

MEXICOLast year Mexico had a terrific MW Delegate, who ended up in the TOP15. This year Dafne Molina - a gorgeous and tall Mexican beauty - seems to be going for (much) more. Mexico is 1 of the countries that may have this year's MW Winner.

PERUFionella Castellanos (a TOP3 Finalist in Reina Sudamericana 2005) is one of the sexiest women I've ever seen! Peruvian beauties have been quite successful the last years and the big success of Maju (MW 2004) seems to be the 1st Peruvian big win. Peru is heading towards its 2nd MW Winner in row!

PHILIPPINESPhilippines has voted the Filipina MW Delegate right into the TOP5 of MW. Carlene Aguilar might even get a TOP3 spot for Philippines this year. Let's see what she can do.

SPAINMereia Verdu Tremosa (a 6 feet tall Catalonian beauty from Lleida) is still one of my big favs for this year in Sanya and she's Spain's best hope since 2001, when Spain reached the Semifinals (TOP10) of the Miss World Pageant in Africa.

Besides those 12 beauties I mention these 15 delegates too:

L-R: LATVIA - MONGOLIA - NETHERLANDS - NORTHERN IRELAND - NORWAY

L-R: PUERTO RICO - RUSSIA - SAINT LUCIA - SERBIA & MONT. - SINGAPORE

L-R: SLOVAKIA - SOUTH AFRICA - THAILAND - UNITED STATES - VENEZUELA

So, we already over 25 potential MW 2005 Semifinalists and that means that we can count on having a REALLY TOUGH Miss World Pageant this year. GOOD LUCK to all the MW Delegates!
