There is an implement called a “spider” that was and is used in campfire/fireplace cooking, It consists of two narrow flat irons riveted together in the middle. The two irons have short legs at each end. The spider is opened to form an X and placed over the coals to set a pot or skillet on.

Maybe the saying was originally “set the spider on the fire” and the term just got carried over when stoves came into fashion. Or perhaps the spider was still used on wood stoves in some cases so that the kettle would not be in direct contact with the hot eye of the stove.
